Sustainable and digital reindustrialization: the great challenge

The most relevant political and entrepreneurial spotlight these days is probably on the reality of the technological industry, as its short/medium-term development will configure the scenarios of the economy and society of the decades to come at national and international scales.

Very relevant actors in this sector - high-level representatives of the entrepreneurial scope, public and academic sector, at both national and international scale - meet every year at the Digital-Economy and Telecommunications Talks organized by the Spanish multi-sector association AMETIC in partnership with Menéndez Pelayo International University. During these talks, the present and the future of the sector are discussed, at a time when digital transformation and sustainability play a main role in the recovery and reinvention of the economy, industry and society.

Digitization is now seen as both a need and an opportunity. Implementing processes, tools and digital contents improves corporate control and productivity ratios, and also creates new business models through the customization of support and service, leading to diversification and competitiveness.

In Spain, for example, the Tourism industry has focused its growth development on enhancing technologies to improve competitiveness and positioning by means of ambitious programs in the field of Intelligent Travel Destination or Connected Hotels.

An inclusive and sustainable process that, eventually, must make the most of the great potential offered by these disruptive technologies to place people at the core.

In the past few years, Televes Corporation has been an asset in this event and has been able to explain their vision as a leading manufacturer in communication infrastructures for homes and buildings. During the latest edition - held in late August -, they explained the keys of the main role that the Intelligent and Connected Building should play for a successful development of functional and efficient Smart Cities.

Digital transformation and sustainability are the foundations of the development of our economy, society and the new technological reindustrialization

Our people

Lucía Pérez Garabán. Software-development Engineer (Hospitality)

It is very rewarding to test new developments as if we were the final customer, knowing that they will be used by many people

The customization of our services is based, greatly, on the development of the software intended for the products and solutions we launch. For this reason, we have talked with one of the main actors of an area that is experiencing a growth explosion.

What is your job at Televes?

I am part of the software-development area for Hospitality, and I also provide clients with support when their incidences cannot be tackled first by the Global Services Department.

How long have you been with the company? Could you describe your career?

Back in November 2017 - my university degree still incomplete-, I joined the Arantia R&D department as an intern in software development. For 6 months, I was trained with my other colleagues, got to know the Arantia-TV project and adapted to the work philosophy of the company. Little by little, I managed to acquire more experience and took over more responsibilities.

Over this time, I have taken part in developments for Arantia TV, Arantia DS, VOD, Transcoder, Nemesis V2 and Hospitality Cloud, using different technologies that have enriched my professional experience.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

Getting to start developments of new functionalities and then seeing their final result. The projects I am currently involved in are somewhat visual and it is very rewarding to test the beta phase for these new developments as if we were the final customer, knowing that they will be used by many people.

What about the most difficult?

Trying to meet the customers' needs and deadlines, I guess. You have to do it in the shortest possible time, when it comes to both new developments and troubleshooting. Sometimes, addressing the challenges that arise while you have little time can be frustrating or stress you out, but the satisfaction you get when the objectives are met is proportional.

What do you feel the key values are in the company?

Promoting our own products to meet the needs of the market, creating the Televes brand vision. Having professionals that know everything about product development processes, from the business area to the installation and communication processes. Working at Televes is different, and the company takes care of their people with services such as catering, physical therapy, healthy Televes, among many others.

Televes Corporation

Increase in value of software fitted in products and solutions introduced on the market

It is quite easy to concentrate the value of a product on attractive finishings, the quality of its materials or its production processes. As for the companies making up Televes Corporation, focusing on these details has allowed us to become leaders in the market.

Perhaps because of its intangibility, appreciating the very same value and effort when it comes to the development of firmware or software applications is not that easy. Televes performed its first software development in 1987. The 8051 microprocessor was in charge of managing a simple user interface and monitoring the channel tuning of CATV and satellite receivers.

Technological differentiation and functionality of the different levels of software have brought to life solutions like digital processing in our field meters for TV signal; content streaming from the cell phone to the TV of a hotel room; remote configuration and programming of a whole lighting network; a simple app to manage and pay for both the power and water supply of a boat while at berth; preservation of data privacy and security of a Digital Home connected to the IoT (Internet of Things). They have even allowed the elderly people to live a more independent life by monitoring their activity and comfort in a non-intrusive way.

In the era of digital transformation, it is becoming quite clear that our motto Bound by technology relates to the capacities of our companies for the development of firmware and software.

Flex floodlights: high power and modular design

LED lighting for professional sports facilities and large areas

Download the information catalog here

Flex floodlights are characterized by their great versatility thanks to their scalable design from 1 to 4 modules on one single support and their different configurations per module - power, optics and number of LEDs. Thus, this range offers a wide range of possibilities that makes it the right choice to light up any space, from small spaces to large sport areas and special facilities.

They have been specially designed to light up large sports areas while fulfilling the light requirements for practicing sport, even when it comes to high-level competitions. They are also perfect for special facilities such as logistic ports, marinas or airports, as their lighting and reliability requirements are vital to ensure visibility and safety.

Having uniform light is essential anywhere, and even crucial in such places. Thanks to our Flex floodlights, you can get high-quality uniform lighting and avoid glares. Its inclined structure avoids shadows due to the overlapping of the modules. In addition, each block is vertically adjustable, ensuring a perfect orientation of the light according to the requirements, and creating a pleasant and comfortable space for the users.

All models of this range have something in common: they have been developed to prioritize durability. Their structure made of extruded and anodized aluminum is corrosion resistant - even in the most aggressive conditions - and subject to endurance tests to withstand intensive use (EN 60598-1:2015).

Finally, among all their capacities, one of them stands out: its quick return on investment: the high light efficiency provides energy savings of up to 80%.

Generate tunneling in your rack to improve ventilation more effectively

You can find active and passive elements in a rack. Good ventilation is vital to ensure a greater durability of the active components, which means a longer lifespan. Installing a thermostat is highly advisable, as it will allow for ventilation only when necessary and when a specific temperature is reached.

Another way to improve ventilation is by generating tunneling, that is, boosting the release of hot air outwards. Tunneling can be enhanced with blank panels, which are also an aesthetic solution to make the installation look organized. Similarly, filling the openings left unused in the trays and panels with rubber caps lets the air move across the rack. Tunneling is therefore generated and also the look of the installation is improved. Ideally, tunneling will obtain more favorable results if every front of the elements included in the rack is covered with preconnectorized panels, compatible with a number of connectors. You will find all the tools you will need to optimize rack ventilation in our range of DataCom products.

FAQs

Why does my TV lose signal or images pixelate in the summertime?

Losing TV signal in the summertime is quite common in coastal areas or places where you can find large bodies of accumulated water.

Poor signal is due to fading effect, which arises when high temperatures make great amounts of water evaporate. Water particles are, therefore, suspended in the air, provoking water steam to affect signal propagation.

The signal we receive in our installation fluctuates and is degraded, so our TVs will display the pixelated images that are quite familiar to us.

Figuring out problems provoked by fading effect is complex because it is an unpredictable phenomenon. However, they can be reduced and, in some cases, removed entirely using a good DTT antenna that can be self-adjusted to keep a stable output signal level. An alternative to this would be positioning the antenna to point a different repeater. The antenna should be ideally oriented towards a repeater with its back to the body of water provoking these issues.

The Ellipse antenna has brought forward a true revolution for this phenomenon thanks to its filtering and self-adjustment system, which allows it to adapt to inconstant signal-reception conditions efficiently and in real time, while being easy to handle for the user.

The CPR: a necessary regulation

What do we need to do and what must we comply with?

Introduced in June 2016 and consolidated in July 2017, the Construction Products Regulation - most commonly known as the CPR - provides for the harmonization of regulations concerning construction products sold in Europe.

This regulation applies to every construction product designed for fixed infrastructures - as for cables, it focuses on ensuring safety in case of fire. Among our products, this regulation affects coaxial, fiber-optic and data cables intended for permanent installations.

Though not mandatory, it serves as an indication of the way to go. Mind you, every country in the EU has their own regulations, meaning that they are mandatory in such territories (ICT, ITED, XP C90-483/486, etc.).

Rules included in the CPR are frequently mixed up with specific regulations that are only applicable as established by each member of the EU. This means that a cable with specific features may be compliant with the regulations in force in one country, but it may not in another. For example, a Dca -s2 d2 a2 cable complies with Spanish ICT regulation, but does not with Portuguese ITED because of its stricter acidity requirements - a1 instead of a2.

AAs an international manufacturer, the aim of Televes is to offer a global portfolio covering all the needs across different markets. That is why, quite frequently, some products that are sold in an EU market comply with the current regulation over and above the requirements, like, for example, data cable Ref. 2123 with CPR class Dca,-s2,d2,a1 . In this case, the Portuguese regulation is complied with (a1 acidity), while it is well above the requirements of the Spanish ICT regulation (a2 acidity), because its higher degree of acidity. At Televes, we always commit to producing cables that are above the regulation, ensuring that they can be sold in any market across the EU.

In compliance with regulation EN50117-9-2, the information printed on the outer sheath of a cable - be it copper, coaxial and fiber optics - must indicate its type of CPR Euroclass.
